South Otago Ka Hui Ako Kapa Haka Event

The Kapahaka group worked extremely hard this year to learn the school haka in which themselves and Timikuka developed in 2020.  This was a challenging task for our small group of boys as we lost our leaders in term 1. I was extremely proud of our junior leaders who stepped up, accepted the challenge, while supporting each other at the same time to build up each other's confidence. Their performances at the Kahui Ako and Community Matariki Celebrations were outstanding and their passion and loyalty to our school was shown on each of their faces and heard through their strong and confident voices.

Community Matariki Celebration Evening

 Lawrence Community Matariki Celebrations 2021

Lawrence Area School supported the 2021 Matariki celebrations by displaying matariki art that our year 0-10 students had created in the gym, our kapa haka group performed and read karakia, kapa haka students and their whanau helped prepare the vegetables for the hangi, Tim and his group of helpers set up and cleaned the gym and we organised and ran the sausage sizzle on the night. This was a wonderful example of local curriculum at its best! Our students got to work and learn off our valued community members during the arts and crafts activities within our classrooms, hangi preparations and kapa haka practices. This was a very successful evening outlining the ideas and values of Matariki to not only our students but to their parents and grandparents.

Teacher Only Days - 11th May 16th August

This year we have had two teacher only days. During these days our syndicate got together and planned two inquiry units. One being the Matariki unit and the other being a Goldfields history unit. An easy way to plan and level learning intentions.

We also discussed local curriculum and the 6 C's for deeper learning
